Ten Hag to pull plug on Man Utd man’s career as big-money signing told he can leave

Erik ten Hag has reportedly told Manchester United right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka that he’s ‘free to leave’ the club this summer, as he’s on the fringes of the squad.

Now in his fourth season at Old Trafford, Wan-Bissaka has almost reached 150 appearances for the club. More than half of those came in his first two campaigns at the club.

The £50million signing missed just three league games in his first season, and four the following campaign. Beyond that point, Diogo Dalot usurped him of his position.

That’s the way things have stayed, other than when the Portuguese has been unavailable. Indeed, Wan-Bissaka – plagued by injury himself – has started just nine league games this season.

It seems he’s now been deemed surplus to requirements. Indeed, Football Insider reports manager Ten Hag has told the right-back he’s ‘free to leave this summer’.

That’s unsurprising given he’s really only played due to Dalot being unable to. What’s more, potential incomings at the club this summer will push Wan-Bissaka further down the pecking order.

Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong has been linked with the Red Devils. It seems fairly likely they’ll pursue him, too, given it’s suggested United will ‘spend big’ this summer and are ‘especially’ keen on the full-back.

Given Wan-Bissaka has just one year left on his deal, Ten Hag will want to sell now to guarantee some of the £50million that was paid for the right-back comes back in.

It’s not likely he’ll be without suitors. Wolves, West Ham United and his former side Palace were all named by Fabrizio Romano as sides who held an interest ahead of the January window.

Since the January window opened, he’s played nine times in the Premier League. Indeed, Wan-Bissaka has been a useful deputy for Dalot during that time.

Given he’s performed when called upon for United this season, it would not be a surprise if those sides were still keen and potentially a few more were to join the pursuit.

That’s on top of the fact he’s still just 25, so he’ll have a long time left in his career and will still be a very useful player for whoever is to snap him up.

Furthermore, given he’ll have just a year left on his contract come the end of the season he’s not likely to command a massive fee, so there could be a good fight for his services.
