Liverpool urged to create ‘something special’ by signing £66m-rated midfielder and Jude Bellingham
David James believes it would be “something special” for Liverpool if they can pull off the signings of England teammates Jude Bellingham and Mason Mount.
Both midfielders have been linked with a move to Anfield over the last year, with the former widely expected to leave Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season.
Mount, on the other hand, has entered the final 18 months of his Chelsea contract and does not appear to be close to agreeing a new deal.
This has left his future at Stamford Bridge up in the air, and he certainly does look like the sort of player Jurgen Klopp would love to have at Liverpool.
The 24-year-old has come under a lot of criticism for his performances for the Blues since breaking into the first team under Frank Lampard.
The amount of signings Graham Potter’s side have made this season may mean some concern has creeped into Mount’s head whether or not Chelsea is the best place for him to be in the long-term.
Liverpool need to revamp their whole midfield and are expected to go big for Bellingham this summer.
While they look like they need at least three new midfielders, should they land the Dortmund teenager, the Reds will probably have to pay at least £130million.
He is worth around that in this day and age, but that sort of fee could obliterate the vast majority, if not all, of Liverpool’s summer transfer budget.
Bellingham is a top target, with rumours of interest in Mount happening in the background, but former Liverpool and England goalkeeper David James thinks the signing of both would be “special”.
James told GGRecon: “I’m a big fan of Mason Mount. If you’re Mason Mount or Ruben Loftus-Cheek, prior to the transfer window at Chelsea, then you’d be questioning your longevity at the club, due to the number of signings that the club has made.
“It’s nothing to do with Graham Potter. I did my pro licence with him and he’s a fantastic manager and a fantastic person.
“But I just believe that there’s a lot of players that have come in for a lot of money and then there will be players at the club who were there before the transfer window, who would have believed they’d be at Chelsea for the rest of their career, like Mason Mount, but will now be starting to question whether that’s the case.
“If Liverpool are interested in him, then the prospect of Mason Mount and Jude Bellingham in Liverpool’s midfield would be something special I think.”
Earlier this month, transfer expert Ben Jacobs said Liverpool ‘stand a chance’ of signing Mount.
Jacobs wrote for CaughtOffside: ‘Liverpool’s interest in Mason Mount is genuine and the Chelsea midfielder will be able to use this to his advantage in contract talks.
‘Mount’s contract expires in the summer of 2024 and Liverpool know they stand a chance of getting a bargain.’
Despite his contract situation, the England international is worth £66.2m, as per Transfermarkt.
