Former Premier League manager Martin O’Neill has slammed Manchester United forward Anthony Martial and claims he is not confident in Erik ten Hag’s forward options.

The Red Devils have had a frustrating start to the new campaign and currently sit in the bottom half of the Premier League table after four matches.

Arsenal managed to get the better of them at the Emirates and Ten Hag’s side are yet to find their flow this year.

Things certainly haven’t been helped by the drama off the pitch and Ten Hag must now find a way to turn the results around.

O’Neill has not been convinced by Man Utd going forward so far and he has been less than impressed with Martial.

“For all of the talented players they’ve got going forward, you’re not confident in them at the moment,” O’Neill told Ladbrokes.

“Anthony Martial’s demeanour would probably irritate you, if you’re a manager – he just seems to mope and moan.

“He doesn’t do enough. He complains when he’s coming off – but you just think ‘you’re playing for Manchester United; you’ve got to be doing more!’ We’re not talking about an ordinary Premier League side here. It’s Manchester United. You’ve got to be better.”

Man Utd were open to the idea of selling Martial this summer according to reports, but ultimately no suitable offers came in.

The forward has often struggled with injuries while at Old Trafford and he has had large patches of inconsistency.

Former Man Utd defender Paul Parker clearly isn’t a fan of the French forward either as he has called upon Ten Hag to drop Martial for Rasmus Hojlund.

“If he [Hojlund] doesn’t start against Brighton, then all fans will want Erik ten Hag fired, and it would almost be justified. It wouldn’t make any sense if he started on the bench,” Parker told Spilxperten.

“Martial shouldn’t even be on the bench. There must be a youth player who is better who can sit on the bench, and Hojlund can be the first striker.

“All Manchester United fans are fed up with seeing a player with a lousy attitude, who always sulks and complains, and it’s a blessing that Man Utd finally has an attacker who plays with enthusiasm.”
