Ten Hag ‘blocks’ Man Utd exit as club face unthinkable prospect amid Old Trafford ‘uncertainty’
Man Utd manager Erik ten Hag has reportedly ‘blocked’ Tom Heaton’s move to Premier League new boys Luton Town over ‘uncertainty’ in the goalkeeper position.
Heaton is currently Ten Hag’s second-choice goalkeeper with David De Gea’s contract set to expire at the end of June.
Dean Henderson, who is likely to leave the club this summer, is expected to return to Carrington for pre-season as things stand.
The England international spent last term on loan at Nottingham Forest but suffered a season-ending injury in January.
It was reported earlier this week that De Gea signed a new contract worth significantly less than his £375,000-a-weel salary. However, Man Utd pulled the plug and offered the Spaniard another deal on an even lower salary.
De Gea is ‘now considering his options’ after the horrendous stunt pulled by the club he has represented since 2011.
And while Ten Hag searches for a new No. 1 and decides what to do with Henderson, Man Utd have received an offer for veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton, according to reports.
The Telegraph say Luton have offered Heaton the chance to be their first choice following their promotion from the Championship.
Unfortunately for the 37-year-old, Ten Hag has brutally ‘blocked’ his exit despite telling the Dutchman he wants to leave.
Ten Hag is ‘reluctant’ to offload the ex-Burnley captain due to the ‘uncertainty’ surrounding the goalkeeper position at Old Trafford.
Heaton ‘will not be allowed to leave the club this summer’ despite the offer to make him a regular starter in the Premier League after Luton boss Rob Edwards made him his top ‘keeper target.
Man Utd’s current situation means they are headed into the new season with the unthinkable ‘prospect’ of Heaton being their No. 1.
The Red Devils are looking to sign a new shot-stopper and have identified Inter’s Andre Onana as their top target.
The report says Ten Hag has ‘great trust’ in Onana, who he managed at Ajax until both left last year.
Onana left the Eredivisie giants for Inter on a free transfer and could leave for around £45million after 12 months at the San Siro.
A report from Gazzetta dello Sport on Thursday morning said Man Utd are ‘determined to pay’ the Nerazzurri’s €50m asking price.
And transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has since provided an update. The Italian journalist says more talks have taken place over the last 24 hours.
He wrote on Twitter: “Manchester United had new direct talks to be informed on Andre Onana deal in the last 24 hours. He’s highly rated by Erik ten Hag.
“Man Utd, still waiting to clarify David de Gea situation before deciding on official proposal. Inter want at least €50/55m.”
