Chelsea line up shock move for Man City star with talks tipped to commence ‘soon’
Chelsea are said to be considering a shock move for Manchester City star Cole Palmer as Mauricio Pochettino looks to bolster his attacking options.
Palmer has had an eye-catching start to the new campaign with a goal in the Community Shield and UEFA Super Cup final.
His long-term future has been in doubt of late though as it isn’t clear how many first team opportunities he will be afforded at Man City this season.
With Riyad Mahrez departing it was thought that Palamer could perhaps take his spot on the right-hand side, but the youngster has only played 10 minutes of Premier League football so far this season.
Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden have been the preferred options for Guardiola so far and Chelsea are now said to be interested.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the 21-year-old is now being considered by Chelsea who are set to open talks soon.
“Chelsea add Cole Palmer to list of talented offensive players being considered for final addition,” Romano explains.
“Chelsea are set to open talks soon as they see Palmer as best solution. It remains to be seen Man City position on Palmer but Chelsea really want him.”
Earlier this month Guardiola provided an update on the player and said that he understands the winger wants more game time this year.
“Cole [Palmer] is with us,” Guardiola told reporters on Thursday. “Today he is with us. What is going to happen, I don’t know.
“I understand he wants to be more active than the previous season. But Riyad has gone so we have one more place there.
“I cannot say anything because, of course, all the decisions need to be made by the club. The club has to decide what the best is. All together, we will do it.”
Palmer could be tempted by the move to Chelsea if he feels he will be given more opportunities by Pochettino.
It’s no secret that Chelsea are looking for a new option on the right-hand side after they failed to land a deal for Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise.
Following Palmer’s heroics against Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup, Joleon Lescott insisted that the player won’t be going anywhere, but things might have changed with this fresh update.
“He definitely has the capability [to step up]. The consistency’s going to come with that because to be doing it at 21 at such a young age,” Lescott told TNT Sports.
“There are massive shoes to fill with Riyad, he’s contributed winning titles throughout his career, so I’m sure Cole wants to do that.
“There’s been speculation of him leaving to get more minutes but after his recent performances I don’t think he’s going anywhere.”
